NANOPORES FROM CHEMNITZ HELP COMBAT DISEASE

An interdisciplinary research team from Chemnitz University of Technology is developing new types of filter media with pores in the micrometer and nanometer range in order to isolate blood cells with minimum mechanical stress. The pioneering project entitled MikroHips (the German acronym for ‘Microsystems with Hierarchical Polymer Structures’) is being carried out by the Department of Physical Chemistry headed by Prof. Werner A. Goedel, the Department of Digital Printing Technologies and Imaging Technology under Prof. Reinhard Baumann, and the Center for Microtechnologies directed by Prof. Thomas Gessner. The project is being funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research until the end of 2011 to the tune of €1.2 million under the program ‘Research for the Market in Teams’ (ForMaT).
