Biotech Network Saxony

Saxony – a first-class biotech location

Since launching its biotech campaign in September 2000, Saxony has evolved into one of the most dynamic biotechnology regions in Germany – and now has its sights set on Europe. More and more biotechnology companies – both major players and start-ups – are choosing to set up shop in Saxony. New branches of existing companies and entirely new businesses are creating a critical mass of research and business, particularly around the biotech start-up centers of Leipzig and Dresden. The result is the sustainable growth of Saxony as a biotech location with its face to the future – and plenty of untapped potential.

Saxony is distinguished by its excellent infrastructure and superb transport links, including two international airports. Prime real estate available at inexpensive residential and commercial rents compared to Germany and abroad provides an outstanding environment for a high quality of life and successful work. This success is also rooted in qualified employees – and over a third of R&D staff in eastern Germany work in Saxony. Moreover, with Saxony coming top in the Program for International Student Assessment in 2008, the future presence of skilled labor is assured!

Top ranking for cities in Saxony

A study carried out by business magazine WirtschaftsWoche in 2008 placed Dresden among the top five German cities with the best future prospects. And in the league table comparing dynamic economic development, Dresden actually came first.

Incubators in Leipzig and Dresden

At the two incubators BioInnovationsZentrum Dresden and BIO CITY LEIPZIG, science and industry work hand in hand on a total of more than 35,000 square meters. Both enjoy central locations in the direct vicinity of research institutes and university hospitals. Buoyed by communication, synergies and technology transfer, the intensive networking of the private sector as well as university and non-university research centers ensures the infrastructure and financial framework necessary for the successful crossover of research findings to industry.
Biotechs and researchers are delighted by the incubators’ exceptional facilities and locations:

Planning for extensions is already underway at both incubators – and adjacent building land is available. Some 80 biotech and pharmaceutical companies along with more than 30 university/non-university research institutes focusing on the life sciences have already put their trust in Saxony as the future’s biotech center in Germany.
