Internationally renowned institutes – lively research environment
Saxony’s excellent science infrastructure forms the basis for a successful development of the biotechnology industry. More than 30 university and non-university research institutes are active in Saxony in the field of Life Science. These institutes cooperate as partners to jointly expedite and apply interdisciplinary research focussing on subjects like regenerative medicine / therapy and molecular bioengineering. Two of the four German centres of excellency in the field of regenerative medicine / therapy are located in Saxony: CRTD (Dresden) and TRM (Leipzig). This close vicinity promotes communication and a work-life balance: university and non-university institutes are located in the city centres.
This fact is appreciated also by approx. 70 biotechnology and 10 pharmaceutical companies which prefer to establish branches in local, lively clusters.

The TRM Leipzig (Translational Center of Regenerative Medicine) is focused on:
- Cell therapies for repair and substitution
- Regulatory molecule and delivery systems
- Imaging, modeling and supervision of regeneration
- Tissue engineering and materials science
Many world famous research institutes are located in the Free State: 16 Fraunhofer Institutes, six Max Planck Institutes, six Leibniz Institutes and three Helmholtz Institutes. Institutes with minimum one focus on life sciences are bold.
Below are listed some examples:
- Fh Institute of Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI, Leipzig
- MPI for Cell Biology and Genetics (CBG), Dresden
